Under threat

Popham airfield in Hampshire is a nice little field that I visited 10 years ago. Serving mainly light traffic in relatively rural surroundings it has been active for 50 years. The airfield has previously been under threat from development and a few days ago the council announced its local plan which includes building 4,250 houses on the airfield. There is a consultation period of a few weeks so objections can be raised. Let's hope this development gets kicked in to touch.

  1. Time is moving on and time was called on Tollerton some months ago but there is the need for housing because up here in Nottingham our wonderful council caters more for students and asylum-seekers rather than couples or single persons trying to have somewhere they call home. In the case of Popham its gone kind of full circle as once upon a time Popham was where warbird restorer Charles Church started restoring warbirds and is it not the same owner of Charles Church Homes until his untimely death in a Spitfire Vb when the engine had an issue. Wonder which house builder construction outfit has bought the airfield to build on ?

  2. I believe it is still owned by the Charles Church family and, as you say, they have a property background so seemingly going back to their roots. Seems a shame to destroy what has been built there but no doubt money talks and we are filling our country with people that apparently have a need to flee their homeland so we have to keep building. Much of the farmland all around me has gone the same way in the last few years.
